Sensor-Kinesis is an advanced medical device technology company created to further Josh Shachar’s efforts in developing next-generation SMART biosensors for being able to rapidly detect a biological sample of interest and convert the information into clinically relevant digital data rapidly, economically, portably, and at a point-of-need location.

Sensor-Kinesis was founded in 2006 when the early biosensor technology that Josh and his team had been developing at Pharmaco-Kinesis for the SMART Implantable Pump technology showed great promise for other fields of use in a stand-alone platform.

“We can do it better, we can do it smarter”
– Josh Shachar.

Initially, the company focused its attention on the development of a Nano-Impedance Biosensor that would allow for real-time sampling of a sample site parameter including the biomarkers related to a disease of interest that were present in a patient’s system. Although pathogen detection was a very well-known science via platforms such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing, these methods required large labs, with very expensive equipment and specialized technicians in order to detect disease pathogens. Both the cost of detection and the time to detect were impediments to disease mitigation especially when it came to detecting a rapidly spreading virus such as Ebola, the Nile virus, or the most recent COVID-19 virus.

Josh believed his team could create a portable handheld device that could take a sample of interest and convert the biological properties of the sample into measurable digital information via its biosensor, and rapidly quantify not only the presence but the quantity of a suspected pathogen at a very early stage of infection. This information could then be transmitted and shared wirelessly from a point-of-detection to the supervising health-care authority so action and mitigation could be implemented in minutes rather than hours or days as is the case with traditional detection platforms.

By building this bridge between the biologic realm and the digital domain, SKC would dramatically close the gap between the patient and access to quality health care, allowing individuals and diagnostic medicine, to cross over into the future.
